As a comatose Ariel Sharon rests suspended between life and death, perhaps summoned before a heavenly court weighing his earthly doings as a trusted leader of a chosen nation, down here on earth the consequence and legacy of his "hitnatkut" (disengagement) is being fought on the ground..
Yes, unilaterally leaving Gaza left Israel vulnerable and weak-looking in the eyes of its enemies. The sudden Biblical proportioned collapse of Sharon himself left Israel with untested, inexperienced, unimpressive leadership, thus emboldening Hamas and consequently Hezbollah, to folly.
But it is also because of the disengagement (from both Gaza and from Lebanon) that Israel finds, now that it has been provoked, the clarity of conscience, and thus the freedom, to act with due fury and resolve the way it does!
It is wonderful to behold Israel united behind it's thin looking leadership... Like in the biblical time of the Judges, God, in time of trouble, raises leaders from among the Unlikely.. . And Israelis, again, are reminded that they have a special role to play in world affairs, a role that will not allow them to be - as much as they would want to - neither as personally secure as Americans, nor as complacently cynical as Europeans...
